I've spent the past few months working on what I've decided to dub "Critter Caps." I decided to make my friend Brianna a sock monkey hat for Christmas (because of her love of monkeys) and many of her friends requested that I make them a hat as well.
All of the hats in the following slideshow, as well as a few others I don't have photos of, were sold for about $10, give or tack a few bucks for additional details or smaller sizes.
The pattern I used to make these hats was originally adapted from Catie @ Do Ah Diddy's Sock Monkey Hat Pattern, and evolved on its own from there according to the needs of each hat.

Jayne Cobb Crochet Hat
My friend Liz wanted Jayne Cobb's hat for her birthday, so I've been searching high and low for a way to make it for her. I've had some trouble finding and working with patterns for the man named Jayne's famous hat online, so I decided to work out my own pattern. For the most part, my pattern is adapted from Lionbrand.com's Earflap Hat Pattern.

Earflaps
Sc in next 11 sc; ch 1, turn. Skip 1 sc, sc across to last st, ch 1, turn.
Repeat last row until 1 sc remains. Sc down side of earflap. Sc across 31 front sc. Make second earflap. Sc down side of earflap and around entire edge. Join with slip st to beg sc. Fasten off.
Ties
(Make 2). Chain 51. Fold tie in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through edge of earflap, forming a loop. Pull ends of strand through this loop. Knot ends of strand together.
Repeat for 2nd earflap.
Pom Pom
Using C, wrap the doubled yarn around four fingers 100 times, cut the end. Tie an eight-inch length of doubled yarn around the middle of the pom pom, pull as tight as you can, and knot securely. Using another eight-inch length of yarn, repeat. Do not cut these tie ends! Cut the loops, puff the pom pom out, and trim.
Finishing
With hat inside-out, pull ends of pompom ties through top of hat in multiple places. Knot with beginning tail. Knot all loose ends inside the hat together. Cut or weave in ends.
Since I'm still experimenting with this pattern there could be some changes to it in the near future. If you have any suggestions feel free to comment.
